Crude humor works for Ferrell film
- Posted at 3:06 AM on Aug. 9, 2008 by Novella Levine
Will Ferrell, left, and John C. Adam McKay’s "Step Brothers" is all about using what you’ve got. Some will recognize themselves in this movie, but take heart; there’s always room to atone, always a chance to right the course. As for those who don’t, here’s a piece of advice. Since McKay has a more rough-and-tumble approach, the raunch he offers is amplified to the point that nobody is going to accuse him of neutering his film’s rougher edges. This is a movie that literally has cojones. In the movie, Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly are Brennan and Dale, two 40-year-old men who act like 10-year-old brats, and who’d rather like to keep it that way. Fat chance of that happening. When their single parents (Richard Jenkins, Mary Steenburgen) meet at a convention, fall in love and decide to marry, Brennan and Dale become reluctant, evil stepbrothers. Taunts, violence and whispered threats abound, but don’t expect the strife to end when Brennan and Dale become friends. I...

NEWS FROM SCOTLAND

Last week end we were up at Kevin’s watching his children as he and Linda where away to London. We had a good time with the grand children and it was very enjoyable. I paid a visit to the pigeon club to meet up with some of the members but my main reason was to take a photo of Joe McLeod, who was 24th open Falaise ,for a future article. I also visited Wynn and Charlie Cameron who have had a good season, and while there I shared a coffee with Bill Dorward and Jim Bruce. I also visited my dear brother scribe Jim George and we spent a happy hour discussing pigeon topics. All in all, a good weekend. Now I must again apologise to Willie Kinnear & son Barry from Gilmerton in Edinburgh, whom I missed out in my report last week on the fanciers who timed in birds in the 3 channel races Alencon, Tours and Falaise. It was not until I was studying the results that I noticed I had missed them out. As soon as I noticed this mistake I wrote an email to Barry and apologised for this mishap. I w...

A Burmese monk, award-winning blogger and citizen journalist, 27-year-old Ashin Mettacara highlights the plight of his people from self-imposed exile in Sri Lanka. For his writing about the ruling junta, he has earned several awards and the expectation of certain arrest if he ever returns home. The 20th anniversary of a crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators in Burma, in which many people were killed, also happens to be the first day of the Olympics in China, which supports the Burmese regime. Buddhist monks have been killed or imprisoned in Burma. I am not a political monk but just an ordinary monk from Burma helping the world to get more news from my country. I am not a reporter. News is difficult to get and if you get information it is hard to get the same printed in the newspapers and in the visual media, because of the tough censorship of the junta. Buddhist monks from Burma dare not write news but, being a Buddhist monk, I have exposed those monks who helped in the killing ...
