As Tropical Storm Hanna bears down on Hampton Roads this weekend, the region's maritime community is awaiting word from the Coast Guard on whether local waterways will be open for business.Maritime businesses are preparing for the possibility that Hampton Roads marine terminals will be shut down for up to 48 hours, a move that could force about 30 commercial vessels and a handful of Navy ships out to sea or to deep-water anchorages in the Chesapeake Bay to ride out the storm. The Navy has plans in place to send to sea a fleet of dozens of ships by 8 a.m. today if weather conditions are expected to become severe. Large vessels are safer at sea during heavy weather because they're more susceptible to damage from strong winds and storm surges if they're in port. The Coast Guard ordered 12 coal ships anchored at the Lynnhaven Anchorage near Virginia Beach to be moved either out to sea or to the Chesapeake Bay by 6 a.m. today.
