NAPLES — Tropical Storm Fay rolled ashore in southwestern Florida on Tuesday without much fanfare, but stubbornly hung around like an unwelcome houseguest, maintaining strength and threatening — once again — to become a hurricane. The storm first hit the Florida Keys, veered out to sea and then traversed east across the state on a path that would curve it toward to the Florida-Georgia border. This storm is going to be with us for a while. That's obvious now. It looks it could be a boomerang storm," Gov. Charlie Crist said at a news conference. Earlier in the day, it had appeared that Fay would simply peter out and perhaps bring nothing but heavy rains to the Southeast. But by late Tuesday, a hurricane watch was posted for parts of north Florida and Georgia. Its top sustained winds increased for several hours durin...

One of the Fundamental Principles of Olympism, according to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), is “…to place sport at the service of the harmonious development of man, with a view to promoting a peaceful society concerned with the preservation of human dignity.” An interesting point seemingly overlooked by the IOC in their choice of China as the 2008 Olympic site. To help raise awareness of what’s going on in China, a new disc has been released: “Songs to Save the World,” brought to you by the Human Rights Torch Relay (HRTR). In the tradition of the 1960’s American protest-song movement it’s a collection of all sorts of musical genres and styles, with a focus on human rights. Freedom First”, the opener for the collection, comes from “Light Club” a three piece band born of socially conscious Connecticut musicians. It’s a great introduction to the project and sets the tone for the disc. Acoustic guitar layered over the electric and cymbal splashes with s...

BEIJING (AFP) — From scantily-clad, gyrating go-go dancers at the beach volleyball to Germany's finest hockey player baring all for a steamy photo-shoot, sex sells at the Olympics.Katharina Scholz has spent as much time in Beijing explaining away her decision to join sailor Petra Niemann, judokar Romy Tarangul and canoeist Nicole Reinhardt in Playboy as she has discussing her part in helping Germany reach the semi-finals of the field hockey tournament."For me it was a good opportunity, and maybe when I look back after a few years I will be proud of it," said the 25-year-old."Not everybody can go on the cover of Playboy. I did it because I am confident of my body and myself. It wasn't a group decision, we haven't seen each other. The shooting was separate. Everyone decided it for themselves."Other pin-ups of the Games have also been happy to pose in and out of competition.US swimmer Amanda Beard was naked in Playboy last year ...

Mumbai, Aug 20 (IANS) “Sushil Kumar deserves the highest accolades for his achievement. The late K. D. Jadhav had bagged the medal at the Helsinki Olympics in 1952, after a failed attempt in the 1948 London Olympics. In order to participate in the event, he begged door-to-door for contributions for his travel, lodging and boarding expenses. The officialdom did not help then either. Later, when K.D. In 1955, the then Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Narayanrao Kamte was touring the region when some villagers told him about K.D. Jadhav’s plight. Jadhav retired as Assistant Commissioner of Police in Mumbai in 1983. As per the pay scales then, my father’s last salary was Rs.1,783 (nearly $45) per month. All his other dues, including provident fund, came to Rs.75,000, which he invested to lay water pipeline in our ancestral farms,” said Ranjit. K.D. Ja...
