Nov. 10, 2005 - Housing Costs Could Impact Teacher Shortage

The Florida Legislature has been presented with a report from the Council for Education Policy, Research and Improvement that says soaring home prices will make it difficult for schools to hire some 32,000 teachers when class-size caps go into effect next year. The National Educational Association (NAE) says the average statewide teacher salary was just $41,313 in 2004, lagging behind the national average by more than $5,000. In July 2005, the statewide median resale price was $252,300, according to the Florida Association of Realtors (FAR).
