Scrap the festival for the prez

Tuesday, Aug. To his credit, University of New Hampshire President Mark Huddleston is planning a less costly inauguration than his predecessor enjoyed. We're glad he's going to save UNH some money. We have to wonder, though, why the UNH president has an inauguration at all.Unlike a mayor, governor or national President, a university president is not elected. He is hired by the University of New Hampshire System's Board of Trustees. He is a public employee, not a representative of the people. Nor is he royalty, although the university tends to treat its presidents like that. Huddleston makes $317,000 a year. He also gets free use of a company car -- in this case a Toyota Prius. He gets to run a partially tax-funded enterprise while being subject to little public scrutiny. And he gets to go to all those football games.
