First Read is an analysis of the day's political news, from the NBC News political unit. From Chuck Todd, Mark Murray, and Domenico MontanaroDENVER -- John McCain's done it. He's got the political world buzzing like crazy about a surprise VP choice. Here's what we know: Tim Pawlenty, Mitt Romney and Joe Lieberman all appear to be out of the running. Of course, these three candidates were the short list, remember? Shows how well the McCain campaign is keeping secrets. The hot name of the morning is Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, someone who has been governor less than two years. The pros of her candidacy: conservatives love her and she's known as a hard-core reformer, defeating ethically challenged GOP Gov. Frank Murkowski in '06. She is WILDLY popular in Alaska. The Cons: Does she pass the commander in chief test? Perhaps Palin is a head fake yet again and we should be looking at folks like Tom Ridge or Rob Portman or even Meg Whitman. Bottom line: maybe the Obama campaign should have put t...

As John McCain prepares to unveil his selection for a running mate today, Mitt Romney seems to be a favorite. But two former Silicon Valley CEOs are also on the short list, and they are both women: Carly Fiorina and Meg Whitman. Picking Romney would help McCain solidify his position with the Republican base, but it would also be predictable and boring. Other women also have a shot at the VP slot, including Texas Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison and Alaska Governor Sarah Palin. But if it came down to Fiorina and Whitman, who would make the better Vice President? Both are whip-smart and have managed large organizations. Fiorina, of course, was the CEO of Hewlett-Packard and Whitman was the CEO of eBay. Both, however, left their CEO posts during troubled times for each company (although Fiorina was forced out, while Whitman stepped down voluntarily after a decade at the helm). Looking at each one’s performance at each company, you’d have to give Whitman the upper hand. The ...

Jack Zink, the Sun Sentinel's voice of theater and the arts for nearly four decades, died Monday morning of complications from cancer. While Mr. Variety, the entertainment industry bible for so many years, wrote in 1975: "Jack Zink is now the Fort Lauderdale News Entertainment Editor -- and also film critic, rock expert, music critic, theater writer, and columnist. Mr. Zink's work extended well beyond the newsroom. In 1976, he founded the annual Carbonell awards. Modeled after Broadway's Tony awards, the regional theater honors program brought new recognition and solidarity to the South Florida arts community. International stars such as Carol Channing and Chita Rivera have appeared at its annual celebration. Mr. Zink not only directed the organization in a variety of roles as it matured over the years, he also literally directed the awards shows themselves as needed. Mr. It would be hard to grow up in South Florida and have an interest in theater and not know who Jack Zink is," s...
