Deals: Aug. Penguin Canada editorial director Diane Turbide and senior editor Helen Reeves have acquired Canadian English rights to a memoir by Monique Lépine, whose son, Marc, killed 14 female engineering students at Montreal's École Polytechnique on Dec. 6, 1989. Co-written by Quebec journalist Harold Gagné, the as-yet-untitled book relates her life in the wake of that tragedy. Penguin will publish in November 2008. Carole Boutin of Groupe Librex arranged the deal. Annick Press associate publisher Colleen MacMillan has acquired world rights to Claire Eamer’s next book, tentatively titled Spiked Scorpions and Walking Whales. A follow up to Eamer’s Super Crocs and Monster Wings, the picture book looks at “the crucial role water has played in the evolution of life.” Annick will publish in fall 2009.
