Obama takes 7-point lead on McCain

Obama leads McCain by 50 percent to 43 percent among likely voters in the three-day national tracking poll, building on his 5-point advantage on Wednesday. It was the second consecutive day Obama's lead has grown as the two-year presidential battle draws to a close. This is not good news for McCain. Support for Obama, a first-term senator from Illinois, hit or exceeded the 50 percent mark for the seventh time in the last 10 days. Obama also moved ahead of McCain, an Arizona senator, by 5 points among men. McCain still leads by 8 points among white voters but only earns the support of about 30 percent of Hispanics, a fast-growing group that gave President George W. The poll also found Obama was doing a better job of reaching across ideological lines, earning the support of nearly 20 percent of self-described conservatives. Lady Bulldogs make short work of Stafford

SWEENY — Playoff-bound Sweeny polished off visiting Stafford to the tune of 25-14, 25-14, 25-8 to assure the Lady Bulldogs of at least a tie for second place in the District 26-3A volleyball race.The Tuesday night romp over the Lady Spartans closes out the regular season for Stacy Holcomb’s Lady Bulldogs at 7-3 in district play and 21-16 overall.Sweeny went into the district finale tied with Wharton for second place in the district standings. The Lady Tigers were scheduled to close out their regular schedule with a game at Royal. A Wharton victory would mean a one-game playoff with Sweeny to determine the playoff pecking order.“Right now our kids are just happy to be back in the playoffs,” Holcomb said. “After missing the playoffs last year, we had a goal to get back there this year and our kids worked very hard to accomplish that feat.
