Corruption With Boston Fireman’s Union Disability ClaimsAug. 28, 2008
Good News! Hamdan Can Get Movie Night! AP: ‘Gay Ex-Governor Owes Wife No Alimony’… Name That Party? On August 6, the Boston Herald reported the good news that Boston’s Retirement Board finally turned down the disability retirement claim of a fireman who was filmed participating in a bodybuilding contest even as he claimed that permanent back injuries suffered on the job had ended his firefighting career. Perhaps there might be hope that the corrupt Retirement Board is reforming what with the retirement of executive officer Robert E. Tierney who is leaving under a cloud of suspicion of corruption — and may be jumping ship just ahead of charges being brought against him. Hopeful, the Herald wonders if the backlog of undecided disability cases will soon be addressed as soon to be former executive officer Tierney allowed nearly 100 cases to sit unaddressed. Conveniently for the firefighters who have filed their disability requests, they continue to receive...

There will be no business as usual in Denver during the DNC!” declares a posting on the site DNCDisruption08.org. It’s a different feeling than Boston, that’s for sure,” Spagnulo said. $10G offered for crash infoAug. 28, 2008
MEDIA COURTHOUSE - Authorities offered a $10,000 reward through the Citizens' Crime Commission for information leading to the conviction of the driver who struck and killed a 16-year-old honor student Sunday night before fleeing the scene. Delaware County District Attorney G. Michael Green said police are looking for a passenger who might have been in dark-colored Mercedes-Benz S-Class that plowed into Faith Sinclair as she was attempting to cross Chester Pike at Laurel Road in Sharon Hill about 10:15 p.m. Sunday. Investigators are treating the passenger as a witness at this time, Green said at Tuesday's press conference, but issued a stern warning to whoever was sitting in the passenger seat. "The longer the time proceeds without that passenger presenting him or herself to law enforcement, the more suspect that person becomes in our eyes," Green said. Sinclair's solemn-faced uncle pleaded for the driver or anyone with information about his niece's death to call authorities. Frank ...

Hillary: The speech of her lifeAug. 28, 2008
Photo: Jason Kosena/Colorado IndependentIt was the old Reagan/Bush I hand Peggy Noonan who described the stakes in Hillary Clinton’s speech to the DNC most succinctly. It was clear, more or less, what Clinton would say, Noonan told NBC. This she did, with the most pitch-perfect rallying cry of her public career. And although the speech Clinton gave feels inevitable in some sense after the fact, because remarkable pieces of public rhetoric always do, what she would do did not seem obvious to anyone five minutes before the fact. Thanks. Do you already have an account? Do you already have an account? I found Maureen Dowd's take on the speech extraordinarily bizarre:"She added insult to injury by coming out Tuesday night looking great in a blazing orange pantsuit and teaching the precocious pup Obama something about intensity and message. She thanked her 'sisterhood of the traveling pantsuits,' and slyly noted that Obama would enact her health care plan rather than his.She offer...

Space flight Knight in shining armourAug. 28, 2008
A COMPANY called Scaled Composites is to aircraft makers what Ozwald Boateng is to tailors. If Sir wants something bespoke but slightly outlandish, Sir has most definitely come to the right place. Burt Rutan, the firm’s founder, supervised the construction of Voyager and GlobalFlyer, two aeroplanes that flew non-stop around the world. White Knight Two is not merely an aircraft. It is the first stage of a spaceship. “Sir”, in this case, is Sir Richard Branson—or, rather, Virgin Galactic, one of his companies. What Virgin has ordered is the largest carbon-composite plane yet constructed. It consists of a single wing 43 metres (140 feet) long (an engineering feat in itself), fitted with twin booms and fuselages. The second stage, the less imaginatively named SpaceShipTwo, will be slung in the middle of the wing and lifted to an altitude of 15km. There, it will be released. It will then make its own way to the edge of outer space, to the acclamation of six fare-pay...
