JOSEPH C. WE REMEMBER ISSAC HAYES: Veteran soul singer's body discovered Sunday morning near treadmill. Isaac Hayes, an Oscar- and Grammy-winning music icon who helped to usher in the disco era, died Sunday afternoon after he collapsed near a treadmill, authorities said. The entertainer was pronounced dead at Baptist East Hospital in Memphis an hour after his body was found by a family member, the Shelby County Sheriff's Office said. Sheriff's office spokesman Steve Shular said authorities received a 911 call after Hayes' wife, young son and his wife's cousin returned home from the grocery store and found him collapsed in a downstairs bedroom. Hayes was preparing to record a new album for Stax, the soul record label he helped build to legendary status. And he had recently finished work on a movie called "Soul Men" in which he played himself, starring Samuel Jackson and Bernie Mac, who died on Saturday.              "I am ...

JOSEPH C. It is a very horrible rumor," Mac's publicist Danica Smith told the Chicago Sun-Times Saturday. "It is absolutely untrue. On Friday, Smith announced that Mac, 50, "is responding well to treatment and will be released soon. He asked that his privacy and that of his family is respected while he gets well."              Within 24 hours of Smith's statement, newsrooms and radio stations began receiving prank phone calls alleging the "King of Comedy" had died.               Denying the reports, Smith said: "He's doing great and hopes to get out soon. He's Bernie -- he's one of the best guys you'll meet."               Smith didn't know what day Mac entered the undisclosed Chicago hospital. She said the pneumonia is unrelated to Mac's sarcoidosis, a chronic disease that can cause tissue inflammation, pa...

Aug. 11, 2008 - Local gardeners do their part to record possible "global weirding"

Koulentes is recording his garden's natural history, from the weigela's first leaf to the butterfly bush's last bloom, for Project BudBurst, a new nationwide research program based on the observations of ordinary people. Only a handful of researchers study plants to chronicle global warming, but millions of gardeners quietly keep watch on their plants. Participants in BudBurst monitor one or more plants, native or non-native, throughout the growing season. Along the way, they record and report the dates of events such as the first flower or first seed. Though some plant experts already have noticed certain species popping up unseasonably early, gardeners may be ideal for observing the subtle waxing of summers or waning of winters. There's something about being in the dirt that puts things in perspective," said Gina Garrison of Forest Park, who plans to monitor plants for BudBurst next spring. With her suburban garden only in its second year, Garrison has not noticed any significan...
