Trust me. The bridge is still open.Sep. 5, 2008
9="Trust me. Trust me. Published: Friday, September 5, 2008 at 3:30 a.m. 2:50 p.m. Friday, Sept. Trust me. The bridge is still open.It was the rumor that had legs Friday; Snows Cut bridge was closing - and soon. Some people said they had heard it over the loud speakers at Wal-Mart. Others said it was sweeping through the post office.A friend of a friend also seemed to be a good source. No matter how the rumor got started, the end result was a lot of confusion as Pleasure Island residents worried if they’d be able to get home before Tropical Storm Hanna hit.But Tim Owens, town manager for Carolina Beach, said there’s a very specific criteria for when the island’s sole bridge to the mainland would close.“When sustained winds hit 45 mph, the bridge gets shutdown,” he said, noting that any closure is closely coordinated with Kure Beach and state and county emergency officials.Owens added that officials also try to give folks several hours notice before a closure takes place.Tropical stor...

Palin asked Wasilla librarian about censoring booksSep. 5, 2008
U.S. U.S. 2008 Pres. According to news coverage at the time, the librarian said she would definitely not be all right with it. Emmons had been city librarian for seven years and was well liked. It all happened 12 years ago and the controversy long ago disappeared into musty files. Until this week. Under intense national scrutiny, the issue has returned to dog her. The stories are all suggestive, but facts are hard to come by. Emmons told the Frontiersman she flatly refused to consider any kind of censorship. I was shocked. Were any books censored banned? Pinell-Stephens also had no record of any phone conversations with Emmons about the issue back then. Emmons was president of the Alaska Library Association at the time. Four days before the exchange at the City Council, Emmons got a letter from...
