Weather remains hot topic on farmSep. 5, 2008
1[3] = "Q.A. My dad works in computers, and I grew up in town. Now, that matters little in the grand scheme of things. I only tell you this to provide perspective. Despite being an Iowa girl, I never did any of those stereotypical Iowa things -- bottle feed a calf, cruise in a combine, etc. -- until I landed a reporting job in northwest Iowa. And then, I got paid to do it. But even growing up in the city with no farming experience, I had a distinct Iowa quality. I cared about the weather. I cared if we needed rain. I cared if we got too much rain. I cared if we got too much rain followed by too little rain or vice versa. And why did I care? Because the farmers did. Period. And talk about the weather was everywhere. They huddled around the coffee pot at the local diner. They stopped each other in the street to lament. They talked about it over breakfast, lunch, dinner and even their midnight snack, when they watched the final weather report on their TV. Elwynn Taylor. "The weather is ...

Hotline After Dark -- Sitting, Waiting, WishingSep. 5, 2008
VP speculation continued last night. NBC's Allen talked with Sen. Lieberman: "You want me to answer that one? Well, I don't think -- I don't think I'm going to be asked. Mike Huckabee: "I can't imagine Joe Lieberman being on the ticket. And I think John McCain knows that while Republicans could accept Joe Lieberman as secretary of defense or secretary of state, that's fine. ... Republicans want to elect a Republican not only to be president, but to be in the position should something happen and be the next president" ("Hannity & Colmes," FNC, 8/20). New York Times' Herbert: "If he were to select Lieberman, I think that by them going and saying 'I'll only serve one term,' it mitigates the advantages of having Lieberman on the ticket. I mean on the one hand, you've got Lieberman there, which would be a move towards the center, trying to get these independent votes and some Democrats. And on the other hand, you have, 'I'm only going to serve one term,' which just highlights the age i...

Sarah Palin: It’s Called SassySep. 5, 2008
At the end of Sarah Palin’s speech, the commentator on MSNBC searched for a word to describe it. He said that it wasn’t all sarcasm and it wasn’t bitter, it was. . . Like this story? Get more! Why does Rebecca Powell have a column on NewWest? Sassy? I call it out of touch with real Americans. Obama promises TAX CUTS for 95% of Americans but she stands their and LIES that McCain will cut taxes. Don't take a 10% chance on change with McCain. I think she was sassy, funny, and showed her support for the RNC hot topic issues. She did manage to rouse the crowd and certainly ruffled some feathers on the other side. To me that is the most interesting part. If she were truly viewed as an inexperienced non-threat, why are the democrats in such an uproar? I'm still unsure where my vote will land, but last nights speech didn't turn me off. It was mostly what I expected, but I was surprised to feel as much of a connection to her as I do. I disagree on her abortion vie...
