I Have a Tendency to Make Myself Laugh

If It Aint Broke Dont Fix It!

Okay… so I just bought the Luther Vandross Tribute Album. It looked really promising. The CD featured amazing artists such as: Mary J Blige, Usher, Beyonce, Aretha Franklin and John Legend. Well as I listened to this train wreck of an album I only thought one thing: “If it aint broke don’t fix it”. My gosh! I understand that people what to do something new and creative with the songs. But most of them came out sounding like crap! Not all of them mind you but… well let me break it down for you!

1.    Never Too Much………. Mary J Blige

a.    I was so excited about this track cuz it’s probably my favorite Luther song and Mary J Blige is an incredible singer. Unfortunately she broke the “if it aint broke don’t fix it rule” I mean if you can take a classic to another level then cool. But if you just do a mediocre remix of a classic… I’m annoyed

2.    Superstar………. Usher

a.    Now Usher sang it straight (for the most part), which I appreciate. However his version lacked the emotion that the original had. I don’t think this was a good song choice for him. His voice doesn’t have the depth. The things that he did add that weren’t in the original were beautiful. So I like the arrangement but not so much is performance of it

3.    ‘Till My Baby Comes Home………. Fantasia

a.    This song is cool. It’s never been one that I’ve particularly loved. But Tasia does it justice.

4.    So Amazing………. Beyonce & Stevie Wonder

a.    This is such a classic Luther song and it’s one of my absolute favorites! Beyonce and Stevie did it justice. It’s one of the only songs on this album that doesn’t make me cringe.

5.      A House is Not a Home………. Aretha Franklin

a.    In my book this woman can do no wrong. This is a beautiful song that I have loved since I was little. She is the Queen of Soul I can’t say anything against her!

6.    Power of Love………. Donna Summer

a.    To be honest I’ve never really cared for this song. And Donna Summer really just drove that home for me with her rendition of it!

7.    If This World Were Mine………. Alicia Keys Featuring: Jermaine Paul

a.    This is one of the only times that I feel the redone version does the song justice. Alicia Keys made this song sound like an Alicia Keys song while still giving a nod to the melody delivered by Luther. This is probably one of the few songs I like on the album.

8.    Anyone Who Had A Heart………. Luther Vandross and Elton John

a.    I need to start this off by saying that I love Elton John and this is one of my favorite Luther songs. I do not, however, feel that Elton John really meshes will with this song. I would have much preferred to hear someone like Joss Stone to try this. I think… wow yeah that would have rocked. I do love Elton John though and this track is better then most on this album.

9.    Dance With My Father………. Celine Dion

a.    This song I’ve heard covered a million times. And I’m a bit tired of hearing it. I must say though when I picked up the CD and saw that Celine was doing it I could hear it right away. This song sounds like it was written for her voice. I love it! Well I’m already sick of it. But I still love it.

10.                       Always & Forever………. Wyclef Jean

a.    Probably one of my all time favorite songs… was butchered! I thought it would be interesting. It sucked. The rap was boring and the singing was flat. What a disappointment. In my opinion the worst song on the entire album.

11.                       If Only For One Night………. Babyface

a.    He does alright. I didn’t really care either way for this one

12.                       Here & Now………. Patti LaBelle

a.    Same as If Only For One Night. It didn’t suck but I didn’t really enjoy it.

13.                       Love Won’t Let Me Wait………. John Legend

a.    I love his voice and talent. This song is no exception. He did well

14.                       Since I Lost My Baby………. Angie Stone

a.    The song was kinda flat line the whole time. I wasn’t feelin it at all.

15.                       Creepin’………. Jamie Foxx

a.    Jamie Foxx probably did the best track out of all the males on this album. I could listen to this all day! Perfection for a cover.

I’m sure you were bored but I felt I needed to express this! Peace! Linz
